Poems of Hawaii

I recently had the opportunity to spend a week on the island of Oahu. These poems reflect my thoughts while there. Incidently, Haunama Bay is where the beach scenes of Elvis Presley's "Blue Hawaii" were filmed.

Oahu

Oahu
the island of dreams
is is dream to me no more
but a remembered glimpse of a blue and green paradise
and the song of a loving people across the sea

I feel privileged to have seen such beauty
and felt such joy
I feel blessed that my life has taken me
to this island of tropical treasures
and turquoise waters

Haunama Bay

The world above
so different from the one below
where once my feet were firmly planted
now I fly and float with ease

Shifting hues move as waves of brilliance
currents of light meet, mix and soon dissolve
colors that illuminate with great expression
soon are gone on fleeting tails

I stretch my hand to the passing life forms
and try to touch these swift darting targets
but failure smiles her wicked smile
as time after time I face defeat

Where once I reached for stars above
to hold me weightless in suspended space
now I seek a lesser path
in my journey to a higher place
